When Old Insulation Has to Go
Insulation removal and replacement is needed when insulation is wet, moldy, soiled by rodents or squirrels, or has fallen out of the crawl space. In humid Middle Georgia, crawl space batts often hang wet and loose, and attics can hold years of pest damage. New insulation over that just hides the problem.
Attics
We vacuum loose fill into bags or a container with hoses run from outside, protecting the house. With the attic floor clear we can seal every gap properly, then reinsulate to depth.
Crawl spaces
Fallen and wet batts are bagged and removed, along with debris. Then the space is either encapsulated or the floor reinsulated.
Failed spray foam
Foam sprayed too thick, mixed badly or put over a leak sometimes must come out. HomeGuide lists foam removal at $1.00 to $2.50 per square foot; Fixr cites up to about $5 when hand-chipped.
Vermiculite
Vermiculite may contain asbestos and must be tested before anyone disturbs it. If positive, it requires a licensed abatement contractor.
