Steel Buildings in a Hot, Humid Climate
Metal building and shop insulation is one of the most common foam jobs outside the city limits. Steel panels heat up fast in the sun, and in a Middle Georgia summer an uninsulated shop can be hotter inside than out. When the building is cooled, or on cool mornings, humid air condenses on the steel and drips onto tools, vehicles and stored goods.
Closed-cell on steel
Closed-cell spray foam bonds to the panels, insulates at R-5 to R-7 per inch (HomeGuide) and keeps humid air from reaching the metal, so the drip stops. It also stiffens thin panels. Open-cell holds moisture against steel and is rarely the right choice here.
Prep
Panels need to be clean and dry. Oil, dust and loose rust are cleaned off, and anything stored inside is moved or covered. Doors and large openings are sealed separately.
Garages and carports
Enclosed carports and detached garages get the same treatment. For attached garages, the walls and ceiling shared with the house matter most, and exposed foam usually needs a thermal barrier.

Metal Building & Shop Insulation Questions
How much foam does a metal shop need?
Often 1 to 2 inches on walls and more on the roof, depending on how you cool and use it.
Will foam stop my metal building from sweating?
Yes, closed-cell foam keeps humid air off the steel, which is what causes the condensation.
Can you foam a building with stuff stored inside?
Yes, with things moved away from the walls and covered.
Is there a minimum size?
Many foam jobs have a minimum; HomeGuide cites $1,000 to $2,000 or more.
